Family Name: Nabidae
Common Name: Damsel bug
Adults are up to 12 mm long, have long legs and
a slender, light brown body that tapers towards the head with wings carried
over the body. The head is narrow and elongated with well-developed eyes, long
antennae and a long ‘snout’ (proboscis) that is fine, curved and carried under
the body when not feeding. Nymphs similar to adults except smaller and lack
wings. Both the adults and nymphs are predatory and hold prey with their
slightly enlarged forelegs and use their piercing mouthparts to suck out insect
body contents. They attack a wide range of pests, including moth larvae and
eggs such as native budworm and diamondback moth, aphids, leafhoppers, mirids
and mites.
