Title of project: Invertebrate knowledge in the Corangamite Catchment: opportunities for assessing Catchment health

Client: Corangamite Catchment Management Authority

Project Outline: Macroinvertebrates are routinely used as biological indicators of ecosystem health in aquatic environments. However, their use in terrestrial environments has been somewhat limited to date. A number of terrestrial invertebrate biomonitoring studies have now been conducted in the Corangamite Catchment and this project is aimed at assessing their utility to indicate Catchment health. After a comprehensive review of the field of biomonitoring and the research results found in the Corangamite Catchment, several key areas where invertebrates have potential as indicators of Catchment health were identified. This project will develop and trial a monitoring program for several of these areas, including the utilisation of invertebrates to monitor the success of agricultural land rehabilitation. This project is a collaborative effort with ESLink Services.
