National Invertebrate Pest Initiative Workshop

Several CESAR Consultants staff recently presented at the well-attended National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (NIPI) annual workshop held in Canberra. NIPI represents a collaboration of scientists from state government departments, universities, farmer groups and CSIRO to help address pest management issues in the Australian grains industry. NIPI is supported by grain growers and the Australian Federal Government through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

CESAR Consultants are heavily involved in research on several major invertebrate pests in the Australian grains industry, as well as the extension and communication of research findings to growers, advisors and fellow scientists. At the recent workshop, our staff provided an update on our continually increasing range of extension activities, and also presented a paper entitled “Cryptic species and uncertain taxonomy: the challenge for IPM”.

Some of the extension activities within which we are involved include conducting pest and beneficial invertebrate identification workshops, publications in various industry newsletters and journals, radio and newspaper interviews and producing the ‘PestFacts South-eastern’ newsletter. PestFacts is a free electronic service designed to keep consultants, growers and researchers informed about pest outbreaks, effective controls and current information about relevant research findings as they emerge during the growing season.

Through our extension work over recent years we have observed a continual increase in the level of awareness of major pest control issues amongst grain growers and advisors. Coinciding with this has been a steady move towards implementing more strategic approaches to pest management, particularly in regards to pesticide usage. Our goal is to see this continue in the future so that growers are able to implement integrated pest control programs that provide long-term sustainability.
