CESAR Consultants were recently invited to
present at the IK Caldwell/Syngenta Crop
Protection Conference ‘One Seed One Plant’ at Lake Hume Resort,
Albury NSW.
Our staff presented a paper entitled ‘Emerging pest issues and
smarter control –
where does IPM fit?’ on Tuesday 9th December 2009.
This paper covered various topics
including:
What is Integrated Pest Management?
Why do growers need to be more strategic?
What are the key components to strategic
control?
Why is pest identification and monitoring
important?
We also presented some of our latest
research findings including work around ‘soft’ pesticides and resistance/tolerance
in redlegged earth mites and other crop establishment pests.
Take Home Messages from the presentation
are listed below:
*Reliance
on prophylactic pesticide use for pest control can lead to pest resurgence,
secondary pest outbreaks and pesticide resistance.
*Smarter
control strategies that consider all pest and beneficial species in cropping
and pasture systems should be considered. *Information
is available for the strategic control of some major crop pests. *Future
research needed e.g. refine thresholds for pest and beneficial species,
consider the impacts of changes in farming practices and climatic conditions.
