Scientific Name: Mycetophilidae sp.
Common Name: Fungus gnat
Both adult and larval fungal gnats can be pests, mainly in household gardens and nurseries. They prefer moist soils with a high organic content. Larvae are predominantly mycophagous (fungi-eating), however they will also eat soft plant tissues such as roots and young stems. This can lead to stunted growth and cause seedlings to collapse, wilt and eventually die. Both the adults and larvae may also spread several fungal diseases. Larvae are small, translucent-white maggots, and have a distinctive shiny black head. Adults are small (2-5 mm long) mosquito-like flies. They are grey-black in colour with long delicate legs and are typically weak fliers.
