CESAR Consultants is committed to long-term projects with a total systems approach to pest management. We aim to provide a more integrated approach to invertebrate pest control in Australian agriculture that incorporates the management of beneficial organisms.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has been promoted as an essential approach to manage invertebrate pests, particularly in some industries where severe widespread resistance has made production uneconomic using conventional ‘broad-spectrum’ insecticide approaches.

IPM involves the use of biological, cultural and mechanical controls, with the support of chemicals when needed. This requires a thorough understanding of pest biology, beneficial organisms and the available technologies necessary to prevent unacceptable levels of damage.

CESAR Consultants is currently working with various organisations in projects looking at:

1. Benchmarking current pest management practices and understanding of IPM principles among Australian grain growers and agronomists.

2. Investigating the use of alternative approaches for invertebrate pest control.

3. Improving skills for pest and beneficial invertebrate identification and monitoring techniques among Australian grain growers.

4. Developing and testing ‘soft’ chemical control programs against key pest species.
